Welcome to Caterpillars!

Childcare in Sudbury 16 months to 3 yrs

Our toddler room is for up to 18 children and with five staff helps children enjoy the challenges of a learning environment planned to provide endless opportunities.

With activities for individuals and for groups, children are encouraged to develop early learning skills in language, communication, social skills, movement, and an interest in the world around them.

There are toys, games, sand and water, craft, music and much much more.

We believe in the highest standards in childcare and Pre-school Education, ensuring the very best start for your child, and peace of mind for you.

Activities

Woodpeckers Nursery provides a well-planned programme that helps children achieve their maximum potential.

A day at Woodpeckers Nursery includes one-to-one sessions, group learning, music, computers, drama, creative activities and mainly learning through free play.

Broadly we look at the whole child, make observations about the children, and use them to plan activities for individuals and groups of children to extend their learning experiences.

Parents Say:

"Billie has been attending Woodpeckers since she was 9 months old. She is now 2 and enjoying her time, making friends, learning new skills and burning energy in the Caterpillar room. Billie wishfully asks every morning if she is going to school! She is a happy, confident and healthy child with many thanks going to the Woodpeckers team " - Billie's mum

Staffing

Our staff range in age and experience. Jeff is a trained teacher with many years experience in Primary Schools. In his last school he was Deputy Head before setting up the nursery with Deirdre. Deirdre also has experience in Primary school, as a teaching assistant, and with other staff has a level 4 qualification, as well as starting a Foundation degree. Many staff have now completed NVQ level 3 training through West Suffolk College whilst working with us, and others are training at present.

Your Toddler & Medical Care

We strive to deal with any medical problems your child may have. We work alongside doctors and medical health professionals as well as taking on extra training for staff if this is needed. This would also involve working closely with parents and carers.

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

The EYFS for 0 - 5 year olds came into place in September 2008. At Woodpeckers our staff took part in the 2008 Pilot Training Scheme, as well as further training since. There are four principal themes:

:: Unique Child

:: Positive Relationships

:: Enabling Environments

:: Learning and the Environment

Broadly we look at the whole child, make observations about the children, and use them to plan activities for individuals and groups of children to extend their learning experiences. Records and assessments are kept of each child's progress, and these are shared regularly with the parents so as to encourage a partnership between parents, carers and the child to support their learning.

Key Practitioners

Suffolk County Council supports the development of high quality early education in a variety of ways. This includes support, advice and guidance from the area educational teams and comprehensive training programme. A number of practitioners have been identified who have strengths in a particular area, these are called Key practitioners. We use elements of their good practice to share with colleagues.

Deirdre Micklewright is a key practitioner for ages 0 - 5. Other settings visit us to see this good practice in operation in all areas of the nursery including The Hideout, our out of School club for 5 - 12 years.

Other Age Groups

The Hideout: After School & Holiday Club

(5 - 12 years)

Catering for parents need for care for their children when they start school. Children now enjoy a purpose built room, totally independent from the nursery, which provides a superb environment for children to relax and enjoy each others company.
